CROP WALK 2011
For 34 years the Bay Area CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Hunger Walk has worked: (1) to raise awareness about people around the world who must walk to find food, water, firewood, freedom and other necessities of life; and (2) to raise funds to help stop hunger wherever it exists.
This year we want to bring together an interfaith walking team to enable people to deepen relationships across religious differences and to work together for the general good.
The CROP Walk is a sponsored walk- people register as participants and then ask families, friends, and neighbors to sponsor them by pledging to donate to the project on their behalf. 25% of the total proceeds will go to local food projects: Sacred Heart Community Service, and the Second Harvest Food Bank; the other 75% goes either to Church World Service or another designated relief agency (see list here). We are specifically working to identify relief organizations associated with religious traditions other than Christianity, and will post that information here.
We have created a Silicon Valley Interreligious Council team, and hope not only to help raise funds to counter hunger, but also to build interreligious cooperation in our community by sharing in the project.
